I am as guilty as the next person of subscribing to everything that catches my eye. Better to have the information coming in and not being read than not coming in at all is my theory it would seem. Unfortunately, I rarely reap the benefits of all this information. Instead I feel resentment and inadequate every time I see all the information just sitting there, unread. Your In Basket / Clutter Filter
Your in basket will be your work clutter filter, your life saver! It will be where you put all your notes, receipts, hard copies of magazines or articles to read, docs to sign, etc … Everything and anything that needs your attention is to be put into the in basket. I suggest it be somewhere you can access easily, without having to search it out so you can clean out your pockets and your bag as soon as you arrive, either at work, at home or both. Your Home Base
You can work virtually anywhere, but having an office or home base certainly makes working less stressful and less difficult than it can sometimes be. I define a home base as a place where you can sit down and process your paperwork, a place you can call your own, where you are in control, a place where you do not have to constantly reinvent your systems. Holiday weekends usually bring me my best shortcuts. I had so much to do this past Labour Day weekend that I knew that a full weekly review was out of the question unless I did it at Sunday brunch with my friends.
